What is Chiropractic?

Chiropractic can cure your back problemsChiropractic is a complementary/alternative health care profession. A chiropractic doctor is specialized in diagnosing and treating mechanical disorders of the spine (including the neck, mid-back, low-back and pelvis) and of the musculoskeletal system. This vastly expanding profession is based on the premise that a spinal joint dysfunction or rigidity, which may be called by your chiropractor a vertebral subluxation, can have a negative effect on your nervous system and result in many different conditions which result in ill health. The best possible example of this interference/dysfunction of the nerve impulses could be sciatic pain, caused by mechanical compression of the nerve root in the spinal column in the lumbar area. Treatments typically include skilled spinal adjustments to correct the vertebral mechanical dysfunction (subluxation).

Main Technique

Dr. Samuel Saukkonen treating a patientSkilled manipulation of the spine and other joints by experienced chiropractor an important technique in today's chiropractic treatment. Chiropractic's contribution to the field of manipulative therapies is the delicate application of a precise adjustment to a specific affected vertebra ( termed the chiropractic adjustment), as opposed to the generalized maneuvers of the early osteopaths.

Our Clinic, your way to health

Dr. Samuel Saukkonen during a chiropractic treatment of a childWe at the Emirates European Medical Centre always take a new patient through a careful and complete case history followed by a full physical examination before commencing any treatment. Only after being completely happy with the right diagnosis do we implement the actual treatment plan. We also use a broad range of other methods directed towards relieving musculoskeletal pain.

For the past 13 years of practice we have grown accustomed to treating a great variety of sports injuries, whether in the spine or in the extremities, and help you to attain increased spinal strength and improve your overall health. We do not prescribe drugs, but pursue drug-free alternative to traditional medical approach. However as a medical professional fully capable of complex diagnosis, here in our medical centre we take patients health as of prime importance, thus when the need arises, we may refer the patient to another more suitable specialist. Depending on your personal problem and when indicated, we consult, co-manage, or refer to other health care providers. Physiotherapy, nutrition and exercises always plays an important role in our particular way of managing your condition with a final objective being to redirect you to a better quality and more enjoyable future.

Chiropractic's approach to healthcare

Dr. Saukkonen treating a patient for back painThough the more philosophical approach of chiropractic distinguishes it from some other prances of modern medicine, chiropractic has much in common with many other health professions.

The traditional medical or allopathic model considers disease as generally the result of some external influence, such as a toxin, a parasite, an allergen, or an infectious agent. The solution is to counter the perceived environmental factor (e.g., using an antibiotic for a bacterial infection).

By contrast, the Chiropractor has contextual or naturopathic approach to health care. Naturopathic approach considers that lowered "body resistance" may cause disease to occur. The chiropractic approach is to direct treatment to strengthen the body, regardless of the environment. In our clinical practice, you can find the right elements of both naturopathic and allopathic philosophy. In our Dubai medical centre, the degree to which we emphasize and balance these different philosophies is one factor that determines the manner in which we practice.

balances the benefits against the risks of clinical interventions
recognizes as imperative the need to monitor progress and effectiveness through appropriate diagnostic procedures
prevents unnecessary barriers in the doctor-patient encounter
emphasizes a patient-centered, hands-on approach intent on influencing function through structure

The Chiropractic approach to healthcare stresses the importance of prevention.

Dr. Saukkonen treating a neck problemAccording to a survey by the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, in 2002, chiropractic was the fourth (7.5%) most commonly used CAM therapy among adults in the USA. The profession has evolved so that treatment consists of hundreds of different techniques. The U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Outlook Handbook said:
“Because chiropractors emphasize the importance of healthy lifestyles and do not prescribe drugs or perform surgery, chiropractic care is appealing to many health-conscious Americans. Chiropractic treatment of the back, neck, extremities, and joints has become more accepted as a result of research and changing attitudes about alternative, noninvasive health care practices.”
